Standard #6 Assessment
The teacher understands and uses multiple methods
of assessment to engage learners in their own
growth, to document learner progress, and to guide
the teacher’s on-going planning and instruction.
Artifact
Moon’s Phase Exit Slip/ Moon Kahoot/ Moon Formative
Attached above is a formative that was given to students to assess how well they know the phases of the moon. Exit slips are one of many ways that a teacher can asses their students comprehension of information. I used this along with Kahoot scoring, which seems to be more interactive for students and at times brings better results. This was used a half-day to a day away from a formative quiz in order to see how much review would be needed the next day in order for the students to perform better on their formative quiz. The next day, small group table drawn fill in the blank assessment was used to help students review and further assess who would be needing more help. Assessment is also done in the classroom through frequent check-in’s (Thumb Check) and general observation.
KEY Pull Back Cars Summative/ Universe Summative
Two summative assessments are linked above, with one focusing on small groups and lab work, and the other is a two-part summative requiring research and a presentation of two celestial bodies and their relationship to each other. Both activities close out a unit and assess students differently. The Pull Back Car summative focuses on small group work and calculations. Students who struggle with one aspect of the summative can be assigned another role and still be present to learn how the other students are performing their tasks (i.e calculations). The Universe Summative has a heavier focus of ‘choose your own way of being assessed’ where all students have to research a celestial body and then they are left to decide how to present their findings. Assessment was graded based on creativity, completion, and centered around a rubric, and ultimately they were not graded on their artistic abilities. Students definitely seemed to enjoy this aspect most.
